Perhaps this is due to the fact it is framed through a supernatural perspective. There aren’t really a lot of specifics I can give about A Space for the Unbound’s story without spoilers, but what I can say is that it explores its intended themes quite well. This bucket list sets them both forward on a journey of self-discovery, as well as becomes the basis for the game’s achievement system. It all starts with an interaction between Atma and Raya where the two decide that rather than turn in plans for the future, they will instead write down the things that they’d like to accomplish both individually and together. The premise gives off the impression that the story, while filled with some familiar clichés, should have a twist, and boy does it. Mojiken describes A Space for the Unbound’s story as being about Raya and Atma, two high schoolers with supernatural powers that find themselves navigating various challenges in their lives, including anxiety and depression. The upside is, if you win, you know you did it through sheer skill, and every win gets you money and immense satisfaction. You will be in the lead throughout the race and one incoming stray car can catapult you to the last place. Because it can get a bit frustrating at times. They could have toned down on the difficulty. All of this is made even more intense with some brutal AI (even playing on easy mode does not feel easy). If you lose, you lose big, going even into minus figures. Unbound has a tight risk-reward system that lets you bet on rivals to earn more. If you get caught, however, you lose all the cash that is earned. The primary objectives are simple: you drive, earn cash, upgrade, and repeat. The neon-clad city and the exhilarating cop chases are adrenaline-pumping. The cops get aggressive at night but it is also the time when you can make most of the money.
